Edinburg is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 48,465. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County.
This city is the home of the Edinburg Roadrunners, a Minor league baseball team in the United Baseball League, as well as the University of Texas-Pan American. Edinburg is also the home town of Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Freddy Gonzalez.
Edinburg is located at 26°18'15" North, 98°9'50" West (26.304225, -98.163751).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 96.9 km2 (37.4 mi2). 96.8 km2 (37.4 mi2) of it is land and 0.1 km2 (0.1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.
In 1908, John Closner, William Briggs, and Dennis B. Chapin developed a new community with the town square located at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 281 and State Highway 107. The town was named Chapin in honor of one of the developers and it became the county seat for Hidalgo County; Hidalgo, Texas was the county seat previously. When Dennis Chapin was involved in a homicide, the community of Chapin changed its name to Edinburg to honor of the birthplace of a prominant local businessman, John Young (Young was born in Edinburgh, Scotland). Edinburg incorporated in 1919.
